Fusion 360 covers the whole span between an idea and a physical part inside one application. Model it parametrically, put it in an assembly and check the motion, run a simulation on it, render it for a client, produce a drawing for the shop, and generate the toolpaths that cut it. Applications that do one of those well are common. One that does all of them in the same file with a live design history is not.
Modelling is history based and parametric, so every sketch, feature and dimension stays editable and everything downstream updates when you change something upstream. Alongside that sits a direct modelling mode for working on imported geometry with no history, a freeform sculpting environment for organic shapes, a proper surfacing toolset for the shapes that solid modelling cannot express, and a mesh environment for handling scan data and preparing printed parts.
Assemblies are handled with joints rather than only constraints, which means you tell it how two components move relative to each other and then drag them to check. Motion studies, contact sets, interference detection and a bill of materials come out of the same assembly. Sheet metal work has its own environment with flanges, bends, reliefs and automatic flat pattern generation for whatever gets sent to the folder.
Manufacturing is the part that closes the loop. Two through five axis milling, turning, mill turn, wire cutting, laser, plasma and water jet cutting, and additive preparation, all generating toolpaths against the model with full simulation, stock definition, tool libraries and post processors for a very long list of machines. Change the model and the toolpaths flag as out of date rather than silently producing the old part.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

Set the project folder to local storage on first launch. The default configuration expects a synchronised location and will stall without one.
Verify a generated toolpath in the simulation before sending it to a machine. That advice applies to any version of any package, but it applies here too.
