About this release

AutoCAD Electrical is the same drafting engine everyone already knows with a controls design toolset layered over it, and the layer is what makes it worth the extra install size. Drawing a control schematic in plain AutoCAD means every wire number, every device tag and every cross reference is maintained by hand. Here they are maintained by the drawing itself, and when you insert a contact it finds its coil and writes the reference on both ends without being asked.

The symbol libraries cover the standards a panel shop actually works to, with both the international and the North American conventions included, and they run to tens of thousands of symbols. Manufacturer catalogue data sits behind them, so a device on a schematic carries a real part number and a real terminal arrangement, and the bill of materials that comes out at the end is a purchasing document rather than a guess.

Automatic wire numbering and component tagging run on the whole project rather than the sheet, so renumbering after a design change takes seconds instead of an afternoon. Cross referencing between parent and child devices updates live. Terminal strip design generates the strip from what is actually wired to it, and the panel layout side places the physical footprint of each device on a backplate with real dimensions.

Reports are the quiet part that saves the most time. Bill of materials, wire from and to lists, terminal plans, cable summaries, PLC input and output address lists and component indexes all generate from the drawing data and update when the drawing changes. Everything underneath is still native DWG, so the drawings open in plain AutoCAD for anyone downstream who does not have the toolset.

What you get

  • Electrical symbol libraries covering both international and North American standards
  • Manufacturer catalogue data behind symbols with real part numbers and terminal arrangements
  • Automatic wire numbering and component tagging across an entire project
  • Live parent and child cross referencing for coils, contacts and multi sheet devices
  • Terminal strip design generated from the wiring rather than drawn by hand
  • Panel layout with real device footprints placed on a dimensioned backplate
  • PLC input and output drawing generation from a spreadsheet address list
  • Automatic report generation for bill of materials, wire lists and terminal plans
  • Full underlying AutoCAD drafting toolset with native DWG read and write
  • Circuit builder for laying in standard motor control and power circuits

Changes in this build

  • Catalogue database refreshed with a large batch of current manufacturer devices
  • Faster project wide retag and renumber on drawing sets over two hundred sheets
  • Report generator extended with additional cable and harness formats
  • Improved handling of drawings that mix electrical and plain AutoCAD content
  • Startup time reduced on installations with large custom symbol libraries

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Extract the archive to a local drive with twenty five gigabytes free.
  2. Disconnect from the network before starting the installer.
  3. Run Setup.exe as administrator and select the catalogue databases you need.
  4. The install is long. Leave it running and do not interrupt it.
  5. Do not launch the application when the installer finishes.
  6. Apply the licensing step from the included folder, then start AutoCAD Electrical and pick a licence type when prompted.

System requirements

Processor2.5 GHz or faster, 3 GHz recommended
Memory16 GB minimum, 32 GB for large project sets
Graphics4 GB VRAM with DirectX 12
Storage25 GB free, SSD required for reasonable project open times
Display1920 by 1080 or higher

Notes from the desk

Set the project properties before you draw anything. Changing the numbering scheme halfway through a project is painful.

Keep the application blocked at the firewall. Licence checks run at launch.
