Civil engineering design built on dynamic models, where surfaces, alignments, profiles and corridors update each other so a change to the road grade rewrites the earthwork figures.
Civil 3D is AutoCAD with a civil engineering model layered over it, and the model is the whole point. Objects are not drawn lines that happen to look like a road. A surface knows its triangulation, an alignment knows its geometry, a profile knows the surface beneath it, and a corridor knows the assembly it was built from. Change the vertical alignment and the corridor rebuilds, the sections regenerate, the earthwork volumes recalculate and the drawings update, all from one edit.
Survey data comes in as points with descriptions, and description keys turn those into styled, classified points automatically as they land. Surfaces build from points, breaklines, boundaries and contours, and the analysis tools produce elevation banding, slope, slope arrows, watershed and catchment analysis directly from the triangulation. Volume surfaces compare two states and report cut and fill without a manual takeoff.
The corridor modelling is the deepest part. Assemblies are built from parameterised subassemblies covering lanes, shoulders, kerbs, ditches, retaining conditions and daylighting, and they respond to targets, so a lane can widen to a survey line and a slope can catch on existing ground with different treatments in cut and in fill. Intersections, roundabouts and cul de sacs generate as managed objects that keep their relationships when the geometry moves.
Pipe and pressure networks handle gravity and pressurised systems with structures, rules and interference checking, and they run hydraulic analysis directly from the network. Grading objects build pads and basins from feature lines with criteria sets. Plan and profile sheet production generates the whole sheet set from the alignment, with view frames, match lines, section views and quantity tables that stay live against the model.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

Pick the correct country kit at install. Changing standards afterwards means rebuilding styles across the whole project.
