About this release

Disk management in Windows will let you shrink a volume until it hits the first immovable file and then refuse to go any further, and it will not merge two partitions at all. This is the tool people reach for when that happens. It resizes, moves, merges, splits, aligns and converts partitions with the data left in place, including the operations Windows declines to attempt.

The migration feature is the one most people install it for. Point it at a new SSD, tell it to move the system partition, and it copies the operating system across with the boot configuration rewritten so the machine actually starts from the new disk. It handles the MBR to GPT question, resizes to fit a smaller target if the used space allows, and aligns the partitions correctly for solid state hardware rather than leaving them offset.

Everything queues before it executes. You stack up a set of operations in the interface, look at the resulting layout in the preview, and only then apply. Operations that cannot run while Windows is loaded reboot into a pre boot environment, do their work there and return you to the desktop. That is far safer than the alternative, and it is the reason this class of tool exists.

The bundled WinPE builder is what makes this the technician edition rather than the desktop one. It writes a bootable stick carrying the full application, so a machine that will not start at all can still be repartitioned, have its boot record rebuilt, have a lost partition recovered or have its system drive cloned onto replacement hardware. Alongside that sit the smaller jobs: secure wipe, surface test, file system check, conversion between file systems and between disk styles, and a disk cloning routine that works sector by sector when you need it to.

What you get

  • Resize, move, merge, split and align partitions with the data left in place
  • Migrate the operating system to an SSD with the boot configuration rewritten correctly
  • MBR to GPT conversion in both directions without deleting partitions
  • Queued operation list with a layout preview before anything is written
  • Pre boot execution for operations that cannot run while Windows is loaded
  • WinPE builder that writes a bootable stick carrying the full application
  • Lost partition recovery and boot record repair from the bootable environment
  • Disk and partition cloning with intelligent or sector by sector modes
  • Secure wipe, surface test, bad sector check and file system repair
  • Conversion between file systems and between primary and logical partitions

Changes in this build

  • Migration routine handles current generation NVMe hardware more reliably
  • WinPE builder updated against the newer boot environment with better driver coverage
  • Faster move and resize on volumes with heavy fragmentation
  • Improved detection of hidden recovery and manufacturer partitions
  • Fixed a case where the queued operation preview did not reflect a pending conversion

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Back up anything you cannot lose before you touch a partition tool. This one is not optional advice.
  2. Extract the archive to a local folder.
  3. Disconnect from the network and run the installer as administrator.
  4. Do not launch from the installer. Close it and copy the licensing files into the program directory.
  5. Start the application and confirm the technician features are present in the toolbar.
  6. Build the bootable stick straight away, before you need it.

System requirements

ProcessorAny x86 or x64 processor, 1 GHz or faster
Memory1 GB minimum, 2 GB for the bootable environment
GraphicsAny adapter
Storage500 MB free plus a USB stick for the bootable build
Display1024 by 768 minimum

Notes from the desk

Never interrupt a pending operation once it has started, particularly one running in the pre boot environment. Losing power halfway through a partition move is the one failure this tool cannot recover from.

Build the bootable stick while the machine is healthy. It is no use to you once the system will not start.
