About this release

Backup software gets judged on one day only, and it is the day the drive dies. AOMEI Backupper is built around that: the imaging is straightforward, the restore path is tested, and the bootable recovery environment ships in the same download so you are not trying to build rescue media on a machine that no longer starts.

It covers the four backup shapes that matter. System backup takes the operating system and everything it needs to boot as one unit. Disk backup takes a whole physical drive including hidden and recovery partitions. Partition backup takes a single volume. File backup takes selected folders with filters and works well for the documents you want copied every night without imaging a terabyte to get them.

The scheduling and retention side is where it earns the running cost of the disk space. Full, incremental and differential schemes run on a schedule, with automatic cleanup rules that delete old chains once a set number of versions exist, so a nightly backup does not silently fill a drive over six months. Real time file sync and two way sync run alongside for the folders you want mirrored rather than imaged.

Restore handles the awkward cases properly. Universal restore puts an image back on hardware that is not the machine it came from, injecting the storage and chipset drivers so the system actually boots. Individual files can be pulled out of an image by mounting it as a drive letter without a full restore. Disk clone moves a whole installation to a new drive, with alignment for solid state targets and the option to clone only the used sectors so a large drive fits onto a smaller one. This listing includes the Professional, Technician, Technician Plus and Server editions plus the bootable environment image.

What you get

  • System, disk, partition and file level backup in one application
  • Full, incremental and differential schemes with automatic version cleanup rules
  • Universal restore that puts an image onto different hardware and still boots
  • Bootable recovery environment included as a separate image in the same download
  • Disk and partition cloning with solid state alignment and used sector only mode
  • Image mounting as a drive letter for pulling out individual files
  • Real time, one way and two way folder synchronisation
  • Backup to local drives, external drives, network shares and attached NAS volumes
  • Encryption, compression level control and image splitting for removable media
  • Command line interface for scripted and unattended operation

Changes in this build

  • Faster incremental passes on volumes with millions of small files
  • Universal restore driver set expanded for current NVMe and chipset hardware
  • Recovery environment rebuilt on a newer base with better network driver coverage
  • Retention rules extended with a size based cleanup option
  • Improved reliability of scheduled backups to network shares that go offline overnight

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Extract the archive to a local drive.
  2. Disconnect from the network before starting.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and pick the edition you want from the included set.
  4. Close the installer without launching the application.
  5. Apply the licensing files from the included folder, then start Backupper.
  6. Build the recovery media immediately, either from the included image or from the tool inside the application. Do this before you need it.

System requirements

Processor1 GHz or faster
Memory2 GB minimum, 4 GB recommended
GraphicsAny adapter at 1024 by 768 or higher
Storage1 GB for the application plus room for the images themselves
Display1024 by 768 or higher

Notes from the desk

Test a restore once before you rely on the schedule. An untested backup is a rumour.

Keep at least one image on a drive that is not attached to the machine day to day.
