Painter changed how texturing is done by making the whole process non destructive. You are not painting pixels into a flat image and hoping it lines up. You are stacking layers, masks, generators and filters on a model in three dimensions, and every one of them stays editable forever. Decide the metal should be brass instead of steel two weeks later and you change one value rather than repainting a map.
The part that does the heavy lifting is baking. Painter bakes the mesh down into a set of maps describing its own geometry, so curvature, ambient occlusion, thickness, world space normals and position are all known to the application. Generators then read those maps, which is why a dirt mask automatically finds the crevices, why edge wear appears on the actual edges, and why a smart material dropped onto a completely different model still lands correctly. That is the whole trick, and nothing else does it as cleanly.
The painting side is a real painting application rather than a token one. Full brush engine with alphas, stencils, projection painting from reference images, symmetry, tri planar projection for anything without decent UVs, particle brushes that simulate paint runs and fire damage across a surface, and a proper vector based decal workflow with editable placement.
Output is where it stops being an art tool and becomes a pipeline tool. Export presets ship for the common engines and renderers, so the channels get packed the way that target expects with no manual channel shuffling. Texture sets are handled per material with independent resolutions, UDIMs are supported, and the whole project can be re exported at a higher resolution at any point because nothing was ever baked flat.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

VRAM is the real limit here, not system memory. Working at 4K across several texture sets will exhaust an 8 GB card.
Bake your mesh maps before you start painting. Almost every smart material depends on them and they will look wrong without.
