About this release

Dimension exists for a specific and very common job: taking a flat design and showing it as a real object. A label on a bottle, a print on a box, a logo on a mug, a cosmetic tube on a lit surface, a stack of packaging on a background photograph. The traditional route is either a photo shoot or a full 3D application, and both are more effort than the job usually deserves. Dimension sits between them.

The workflow is deliberately short. Drop a model into the scene from the included library or import your own, drop a material onto it, drag your artwork from a vector or raster file straight onto the surface where it wraps to the geometry, choose an environment light, move the camera until the composition reads, and render. Nothing about it requires knowing how a node based shader graph works.

The lighting is where the realism comes from. Environment lighting uses full image based lights so reflections and shadow colour come from a real scene rather than being invented, and if you place your object on a background photograph the application will match the light direction and the perspective to it automatically. Sun position, intensity and the ground shadow behave physically, and the material response covers metal, plastic, glass, fabric, wood, paper and coated finishes convincingly.

The render output is designed to be finished elsewhere. Alongside the final image you get separate render passes for the object, the shadow, the reflection, the background and the depth, delivered as a layered document so the composite can be adjusted in a raster editor without re rendering. There is also an interactive published output that lets someone spin the object in a browser view rather than looking at a still.

What you get

  • Model library plus import for the common 3D interchange formats
  • Artwork dragged from vector or raster files directly onto a surface with automatic wrapping
  • Material library covering metal, plastic, glass, fabric, wood, paper and coated finishes
  • Image based environment lighting with real reflection and shadow colour
  • Automatic light and perspective matching to a background photograph
  • Physically behaved sun position, intensity and ground shadow controls
  • Camera control with focal length, depth of field and composition guides
  • Progressive preview render that resolves while you keep working
  • Layered output with separate object, shadow, reflection, background and depth passes
  • Interactive published output for spinning the object in a browser view

Changes in this build

  • Render engine faster on machines with a supported graphics card, with less noise at the same sample count
  • Material library expanded with additional coated and textured finishes
  • Artwork placement handles curved and irregular surfaces more predictably
  • Background matching improved on photographs with mixed lighting
  • Fixed a case where imported models with very high polygon counts could stall the preview

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Extract the archive to a local drive with ten gigabytes free.
  2. Disconnect from the network before starting the installer.
  3. Pause real time protection for the duration.
  4. Run Set-up.exe as administrator and choose your interface language.
  5. Let the installer finish and close it rather than launching from it.
  6. Start Dimension from the Start menu and let the material and model libraries index on first run.
  7. Block the executable in your firewall to keep the install as it is.

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD, 64 bit, quad core or better
Memory8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended for large scenes
Graphics4 GB VRAM with a ray tracing capable adapter for the fast render path
Storage10 GB free
Display1920 by 1080

Notes from the desk

Keep imported models reasonable. This is a visualisation tool, not a modeller, and it slows badly past a few million polygons.

Render the layered output rather than the flat image. Adjusting a shadow afterwards is far cheaper than rendering again.
