The raw processing engine that sits underneath the Adobe photo applications, with the full masking stack, lens profiles and camera support brought up to current bodies.
Camera Raw is the layer that turns sensor data into an image, and it is shared by Photoshop, Bridge and the Lightroom family. Installing it as a separate component is what you do when the host application shipped with an older engine and will not open files from a camera released after it. The processing pipeline and the sliders are identical to what the Lightroom develop module presents, because it is the same code.
The adjustment set is the full modern one. Exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, blacks, texture, clarity and dehaze on the basic panel. Tone curve with point and parametric modes and per channel curves. HSL for eight colour bands. Colour grading with separate wheels for shadows, midtones and highlights plus blending and balance. Detail with sharpening, radius, detail and masking, plus the machine learning denoise pass that works on the raw mosaic before demosaicing and is markedly better than anything applied afterwards.
Masking is where the current engine pulls away from older versions. Subject, sky, background, objects and people are detected automatically, and people detection breaks down into skin, eyes, teeth, lips, hair, eyebrows and clothing as separate selectable components. Those masks combine with brushes, linear and radial gradients, colour range and luminance range using intersect and subtract, so a local adjustment can be built precisely without leaving the raw stage. Every mask remains editable forever because nothing is baked.
The supporting infrastructure matters as much as the sliders. Lens correction profiles for thousands of body and lens combinations handle distortion, vignetting and chromatic aberration automatically. Camera matching profiles reproduce the manufacturer picture styles as a starting point. Geometry correction has automatic and guided upright modes for architecture. Everything is written to sidecar metadata or into the file's own metadata block, so the original raw data is never modified and settings travel with the file between machines.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

Denoise writes a new linear raw file next to the original rather than editing in place, so it will consume disk space quickly across a full shoot.
Sidecar files carry your edits. If you move raw files between machines and leave the sidecars behind, the images will open flat.
