Bridge is the file browser that understands what creative files actually are. Where the operating system shows you a folder of names, Bridge shows you the images, the layered documents, the vector files, the video clips, the fonts and the colour swatches, with real previews generated from the file rather than a stored thumbnail that might be stale. For anyone working across a suite of applications it is the layer that ties them together.
The ingest side handles a card straight off a camera. The photo downloader copies files with a rename template applied, converts to a common raw format if you want, writes metadata on the way in, and makes a second copy to another drive in the same pass, which is the only backup step most photographers will ever reliably do. From there the review workflow is ratings, colour labels, filtering and stacking, all keyboard driven so a thousand frame shoot can be culled in one sitting.
Metadata is the part that pays off later. Bridge reads and writes the full metadata block, applies templates across a selection, finds and replaces across fields, and searches on any of it including camera settings, keywords, copyright and file properties. Collections gather files from anywhere on disk into one view without moving them, and smart collections keep themselves current from a saved search.
The batch tools cover the repetitive jobs. Rename hundreds of files with a compound template, run an export preset that resizes and converts a whole selection, apply raw settings from one file across a shoot, generate contact sheets and web output, and push a selection straight into the editor as layers, a panorama or a stacked composite. Set the cache to a fast drive and cap its size in preferences. Left alone it will grow into tens of gigabytes.
Let a folder finish building previews before you start rating. Culling against half generated thumbnails wastes the pass.
