ACDSee's distinguishing feature is that it browses rather than imports. Point it at a folder and the photographs are there immediately, at full quality, with no catalogue build to wait for and no proxy generation before you can look at anything. On a library of several hundred thousand files across several drives, that difference is the reason people choose it over the catalogue driven alternatives.
The Manage mode is a genuine asset management system on top of that browsing speed. Ratings, colour labels, hierarchical keywords, categories, face recognition, geographic tagging on a map, and custom metadata fields you define yourself. Searching combines any of those with file properties and camera metadata, and saved searches update themselves. Everything can be written to the file's own metadata so the work is not trapped in one application's database.
Develop mode is a full non destructive raw processor. Exposure, tone curve, white balance, highlight and shadow recovery, clarity and dehaze, colour grading wheels, detail and noise reduction, lens correction, perspective and chromatic aberration handling. Adjustments can be brushed, graduated or applied through a colour or luminance range, and every setting stays editable forever because nothing is written into the original file.
Edit mode is where Ultimate separates from the lower editions, because it is a real layered pixel editor rather than a set of sliders. Layers with blend modes and masks, adjustment layers, selection tools including a colour range and a smart brush, healing and cloning, text and shape layers, and support for common plugin formats. In practice that means the whole job, from finding the file through developing the raw to finishing a composite, happens in one place.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

Turn on writing metadata to files in preferences if you ever intend to move to another application. It costs nothing and saves everything.
Keep the database on an internal drive. Browsing works over a network but the database does not belong there.
