PDFelement covers essentially everything the expensive PDF applications do, in a window that is quieter about it and an install that is a fraction of the size. That combination is why it keeps turning up on machines where somebody needed to edit a contract once and then never uninstalled it. It opens fast, it does not install a services stack, and the tool you want is generally on the first row of the ribbon.
Text editing works in two modes, and knowing the difference saves a lot of frustration. Line mode treats each line as its own object, which is right for forms, tables and anything where the layout must not move. Paragraph mode groups the text into blocks that reflow when you edit them, which is right for prose. Both are one click apart, and the font of the surrounding text is matched automatically when you type new content into a block.
OCR handles scanned documents in dozens of languages and offers the two useful outputs: searchable text placed invisibly behind the original scan, which keeps the document looking exactly as it did, or a fully editable document where the recognised text becomes real text objects you can change. Batch OCR runs across a folder unattended. Conversion in both directions covers Word, Excel, PowerPoint, images, HTML, EPUB and plain text, and the conversion to Excel is noticeably better at reconstructing tables than the price would suggest.
The rest is the professional set you would expect. Form field detection with calculations and validation, form data extraction from a stack of filled documents into one spreadsheet, true redaction with metadata stripping, password and permission security, watermarks, Bates numbering, page organisation, document comparison and a full annotation toolkit. Batch processing handles conversion, OCR, watermarking, security, optimisation and data extraction across folders.
