A trimmed Windows 10 Professional image with the background services and preinstalled applications stripped out, built for old machines and for anyone who wants the system to stay out of the way.
A lite image is Windows with the parts most people never use removed before installation rather than uninstalled afterwards. The result boots faster, idles with a fraction of the memory in use, and stops generating the background disk activity that makes an older machine with a mechanical drive feel permanently busy. On hardware with four gigabytes of memory the difference is not subtle.
What comes out is the preinstalled store applications, the telemetry and diagnostic reporting stack, the advertising and suggestion delivery, the assistant, the news and interests feed, most of the tablet oriented components, and the background maintenance tasks that run whether or not anything needs maintaining. What stays is the whole Professional feature set that makes a machine usable for work: BitLocker, Remote Desktop hosting, domain join, the Group Policy editor, Hyper-V and the update deferral controls.
The compatibility question is the one worth understanding. A trimmed image is a compromise: nothing that has been removed can be added back later from the features panel, and a small number of applications expect a component that is no longer present. In practice the common desktop software is fine. Anything that depends on the store framework or the tablet components is where problems appear, so it is worth checking your list before committing a machine to it.
The image is offered in several configurations in the same file: a lightly trimmed build that keeps almost everything, a moderate build, and a heavily stripped build for the oldest hardware. Both x86 and x64 setups are included, it is multilingual with the language chosen at setup, it arrives already licensed, and it is available as a direct download and as a torrent magnet.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.
