The player that opens the file nothing else will open, with every codec built in, no library to maintain and no component that has to be fetched afterwards.
VLC has one job and it has never failed at it. Every decoder it needs is compiled into the application, so there is no codec pack to install, no filter chain to configure and no situation where a file plays on one machine and not another because a component is missing. Drop in an obscure container from an old camera, a partially downloaded archive, a disc image, a raw stream or a file with a broken index, and it will make a serious attempt at playing it.
The recovery behaviour is what earns it a permanent place on most machines. A file with a damaged header gets rebuilt on the fly. An incomplete download plays up to the point the data stops. A stream that drops out gets picked back up. It does not refuse to open something because the metadata is wrong, which is the failure most other players lead with.
Underneath the plain interface there is a great deal more than a play button. Network streams over most protocols, a full conversion and transcoding front end, screen and camera capture, subtitle handling with sync offset and downloadable tracks, audio and video filters including an equaliser and a proper deinterlacer, frame by frame stepping, playback speed control in fine increments, and video snapshots to a folder of your choosing.
It has no library, no account, no media scanner walking your drives in the background and nothing to sign into. You point it at a file and it plays the file. The interface is skinnable if you want it to be, keyboard driven if you prefer, and the command line accepts almost the entire feature set for scripting.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

If a file stutters, switch hardware decoding off in preferences and try again. Some driver combinations handle it badly.
The conversion front end writes to the folder you pick and will overwrite without a second prompt, so check the output path before starting.
