Smadav is deliberately not a replacement for a main protection product. It is designed as a second layer that installs alongside one without the two fighting, using very little memory and no heavy real time filter driver. The point is coverage of a specific gap: the things that travel on removable drives and shared folders, which mainstream products often catch late because the pattern looks like ordinary file activity.
The removable drive handling is the core feature. Any stick, card or external drive that gets attached is scanned automatically before you open it, and the scanner knows the family of tricks that live there: files hidden and replaced with shortcuts pointing at a payload, folders given system and hidden attributes so they disappear, autorun entries, and executables named after the folder they sit next to. It restores what was hidden rather than only removing what it found, which is the part people actually care about.
Alongside the signature scanner there is a behavioural layer that watches for the actions this category of thing performs: mass attribute changes across a drive, sudden shortcut creation, registry run key additions and attempts to disable the task manager, the registry editor or the folder options dialogue. Those protections can be re enabled from the tools panel when something has already turned them off.
The Pro tier adds automatic signature updates, a scheduled scan, an exception list, a customisable scanning colour theme, administrator mode with the full tool set, and the ability to run the scanner without the profit use restriction. The tools panel also carries a process manager, a system editor for the policies commonly tampered with, a one click cleaner for the shortcut infection pattern, and a smart file lock for removable drives.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.
