About this release

iTop VPN is a straightforward desktop client for routing your connection through a server somewhere else. The main window is a country list and a connect button, and for most people that is the entire interaction. Underneath, it establishes an encrypted tunnel, replaces your visible address with the server's, and hands your traffic out from there instead of from your own line.

The server list is organised by what people actually want to do rather than only by geography. There are groups for general browsing, for streaming services by region, for gaming with the lowest latency route, and for peer to peer traffic on servers that allow it. Each entry shows a load indicator and a latency figure, and there is an automatic option that simply picks the fastest available server for what you selected.

Split tunnelling is the feature that makes it usable day to day. You choose which applications go through the tunnel and which use the normal connection, so a video call or a local network printer keeps working while a browser routes elsewhere. The kill switch covers the other direction: if the tunnel drops, network access is cut entirely until it reconnects, rather than quietly falling back to your own address without telling you.

The privacy tools bundled alongside are simple but useful. A browser cleanup that clears history, cookies, cached files and stored form data across the installed browsers, a check that reports which of your details are visible to a site, an ad and tracker blocker at the connection level, and a DNS leak test you can run to confirm lookups are actually going through the tunnel.

What you get

  • Servers across a long country list with load and latency shown per entry
  • Groups organised for browsing, streaming by region, gaming latency and peer to peer
  • Automatic server selection that picks the fastest route for the task
  • Split tunnelling by application so local traffic bypasses the tunnel
  • Kill switch that cuts network access entirely if the tunnel drops
  • Ad and tracker blocking applied at the connection level
  • Browser privacy cleanup across history, cookies, cache and stored form data
  • DNS leak test and a visible details report you can run at any time
  • Protocol selection with automatic fallback on restrictive networks
  • Auto connect on startup with a per network trust list

Changes in this build

  • Server list expanded and several regions given additional capacity
  • Connection speed improved on the automatic protocol under congestion
  • Split tunnelling now handles applications launched by other applications correctly
  • Kill switch response time reduced noticeably
  • Fixed a case where the client could fail to reconnect after the machine woke from sleep

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Extract the archive to a local folder.
  2. Uninstall any other VPN client first. Two virtual adapters will fight over the route table.
  3. Run the installer and allow the network adapter driver when Windows asks.
  4. Close the installer without launching the application.
  5. Copy the contents of the unlock folder into the installation directory, overwriting when asked.
  6. Start the client, turn on the kill switch in settings, and run the leak test once before you rely on it.

Notes from the desk

Disable the automatic updater in settings. An update will replace the licensing module.

If the tunnel connects but nothing loads, flush the DNS cache and reconnect. A stale entry from the previous adapter is the usual cause.
