Avast Premium Security is the paid tier above the free antivirus, and the difference is not the detection engine, which is shared, but everything wrapped around it. The free product scans files and watches behaviour. This one adds ransomware protection on nominated folders, a firewall you can actually configure, network inspection, a sandbox for running things you do not trust, webcam and microphone access control, and the fake site protection layer.
Detection works on several layers at once. A traditional signature scan for known families, a behaviour shield that watches what a running process does rather than what it looks like, a script shield covering the browser and the scripting hosts, and a cloud reputation lookup for files nobody in the network has seen before. CyberCapture holds unknown executables and analyses them before they get to run, which is the layer that catches the newest material.
The privacy side is the reason a lot of people move up a tier. Webcam Shield blocks any application from opening the camera without an explicit allowance, and it means it: the block is at the driver level rather than a notification after the fact. Sensitive Data Shield watches the document folders where personal records live. The firewall gives per application rules with separate profiles for trusted and public networks, and Wi-Fi Inspector scans everything on the local segment for weak configuration and open services.
Practical management is straightforward. Scheduled scans, a boot time scan for anything that hides during a normal session, quarantine with restore, a rescue disk builder, a passive mode if you are running another product alongside, and a silent mode that suppresses everything during full screen use. Updates for the definition set are separate from application updates, so the engine stays current without a reinstall.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

Turn off the browser extension and the cleanup nagging during install if you only want the shields. Both are optional components on the custom screen.
Definition updates run independently of the application version. Leave them on automatic even if you pin the application build.
