About this release

Resolume Arena is used to play video live. The composition is a grid of clips arranged in layers and columns, and you trigger them from a keyboard, a control surface, a timeline or an incoming signal, with each layer blending into the ones beneath it exactly like a compositing stack that happens to be running in real time. That model is simple to learn and holds up under a two hour set, which is why it is the standard in the room.

Every clip has its own transport, playback direction, speed, beat sync and loop mode, and every parameter in the application can be animated, tied to the tempo, driven by audio analysis or bound to an external controller. The effects chain sits on clips, layers and the master output independently, so you can build a look at the source and then push the whole composition through a further stage without touching the individual clips.

Arena is the tier that adds output handling, which is what separates a visual player from an installation tool. The advanced output window lets you slice the composition and send each slice to a different projector or display, warp each slice onto the surface it is actually hitting with bezier and mesh correction, soft edge blend where projectors overlap, and mask off the parts that should not be lit. A whole multi projector mapped surface is configured and saved inside the same file as the show.

It also carries the live sources and integration that a show needs: camera and capture card input treated as clips, network video in and out for sharing frames with other applications on the machine, timecode synchronisation, a DMX interface for taking control from a lighting desk or driving fixtures from the visuals, audio analysis with frequency band routing, and a timeline sequencer for anything that has to run the same way every night.

What you get

  • Clip based composition grid with layers, columns and a full blend mode stack
  • Per clip transport with direction, speed, loop mode and beat synchronisation
  • Effects applied independently at clip, layer and master output level
  • Advanced output with slicing to multiple projectors and displays
  • Bezier and mesh warping to map a slice onto an irregular physical surface
  • Soft edge blending and masking for overlapping projector coverage
  • Camera, capture card and network video sources treated as ordinary clips
  • DMX interface for control from a lighting desk and for driving fixtures from the visuals
  • Audio analysis with frequency band routing to any animated parameter
  • Timeline sequencer and timecode synchronisation for repeatable shows

Changes in this build

  • Playback engine handles higher clip counts at 4K without frame drops
  • Advanced output warping interface reworked with finer control point handling
  • Additional codec support for the newer intraframe delivery formats
  • Controller mapping learns faster and stores per composition as well as globally
  • Fixed a case where a saved output configuration could load with slices offset by one pixel

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Extract the archive to a local drive with ten gigabytes free.
  2. Uninstall any earlier Resolume build and reboot.
  3. Disconnect from the network.
  4. Run the installer as administrator and let the codec components install when prompted.
  5. Close the installer rather than launching from it.
  6. Copy the contents of the unlock folder into the installation directory, overwriting when asked.
  7. Start the application and configure your outputs before loading a composition.

System requirements

ProcessorIntel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 or better, 64 bit
Memory16 GB minimum, 32 GB for 4K multi layer work
Graphics8 GB VRAM strongly recommended, more for multiple outputs
Storage10 GB free plus fast storage for your clip library
Display1920 by 1080 for the interface plus your output displays

Notes from the desk

Convert your clips to an intraframe codec before a show. Long GOP files will drop frames when several play at once.

Save the output configuration separately as well as inside the composition. Rebuilding a mapped surface from scratch on site is a bad evening.
