ProtonVPN is a client for routing your traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a server somewhere else before it reaches the wider network. The practical effects are the ones you would expect: the network you are sitting on sees an encrypted stream rather than your traffic, and the services you reach see the server's address rather than yours. On a shared or public connection that is worth having.
The client covers the protocol range rather than picking one. A modern fast tunnelling protocol for everyday use, the older well audited one for compatibility with restrictive networks, and a stealth mode that disguises the tunnel as ordinary encrypted web traffic for connections that block tunnels outright. Protocol selection can be automatic or fixed per connection profile.
The kill switch is implemented at the network filter level rather than by watching the connection and reacting, which means traffic cannot leak during the window where a tunnel drops and reconnects. There is also a permanent mode that blocks all traffic outside the tunnel even before the client starts, so a machine that reboots does not spend thirty seconds connected in the clear. Split tunnelling lets chosen applications or addresses bypass the tunnel where you want them to.
Beyond the basic connection there is multi hop routing through two servers so the entry server never sees the destination and the exit server never sees the origin, a filtering layer that blocks advertising, tracking and known bad destinations at the resolver, servers optimised for high throughput transfer, a connection profile system for saving country and protocol combinations, and a port forwarding control for anything that needs an incoming connection.
