PDF-XChange Editor is the answer for people who want everything a full PDF application does without waiting for a heavyweight suite to load. It opens a large document almost instantly, scrolls smoothly through a thousand pages, and keeps the memory footprint low enough that you can leave a dozen documents open across tabs while you work.
Editing is genuine rather than cosmetic. Text can be changed in place with the paragraph reflowing, fonts substituted or embedded, images inserted, replaced, cropped and resized, and page content moved around freely. Pages themselves can be inserted, extracted, split, merged, rotated, cropped, resized and renumbered, and documents can be combined from a mixed pile of PDFs, images, Word files and plain text in one operation.
The Plus designation is about forms and dynamic stamps. You get the full form designer with field detection on existing documents, JavaScript actions, calculations, validation, tab ordering and submit behaviour, plus the ability to create your own dynamic stamps that pull in the user name, a counter or a relative timestamp when they are placed. Filled form data can be exported and imported as FDF or XFDF for round tripping.
The annotation and review side is deep. Highlight, strikeout, underline, sticky notes, callouts, measuring tools, shapes, freehand ink with pressure, file attachments and audio comments, all listed in a comments pane you can filter, sort, reply to and export as a summary. OCR handles scanned paper in a large language set and writes searchable text behind the image, and the redaction tool removes the underlying content properly instead of covering it.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

The OCR language packs are installed alongside. Deselect the ones you do not need to save around six hundred megabytes.
Turn off the automatic update check in preferences. An update will replace the licensing module.
