The release that introduced the ribbon and the modern file formats, kept here as a light, complete suite that still opens everything people send.
Office 2007 is the release where the whole interface changed. The menu bar and the toolbars were replaced by the ribbon, and the file formats moved to the zipped XML containers that are still in use, which is why a document saved from this suite opens in anything released since. For a lot of machines it remains the practical choice: it is small, it installs in minutes, it runs on hardware that struggles with anything current, and it does the work.
The suite covers Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Publisher, OneNote and InfoPath depending on which components you select during setup. Word has the full styles, references, mail merge and review tooling. Excel has the pivot table engine, conditional formatting, the full function library and the chart engine that was rebuilt for this release. PowerPoint gained the SmartArt graphics that most people associate with the era. Outlook handles mail, calendar, contacts and tasks against standard servers.
The ribbon itself is worth mentioning because it is the reason this release is either loved or hated. Commands are grouped by task on tabs rather than buried in nested menus, contextual tabs appear when you select a table or an image, and the quick access toolbar can be loaded with whatever you actually use. Once learned it is faster than the menus it replaced, and every Office release since has used the same model.
Practically, this is a light install with a small footprint that coexists with newer versions if you keep the install paths separate. It reads and writes the modern formats natively, exports to PDF with the included add in, and the file dialogs and print pipeline behave normally on current Windows. It is here because plenty of machines and plenty of workflows still want exactly this.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

If you also run a newer Office release, install this one to a different folder and expect the file associations to be claimed by whichever was installed last.
Outlook profiles from a newer release are not backward compatible. Create a fresh profile rather than pointing this at an existing one.
