PowerDVD is a media player that treats playback quality as the product rather than as a side effect. It decodes in hardware wherever the graphics card allows it, keeps the video path free of unnecessary colour conversions, and applies its own enhancement stage on the way to the panel. On a large television fed from a machine, the difference against a plain player on the same file is visible.
The format coverage is unusually wide. Physical discs including the high definition formats, disc folder structures, ISO images, and file playback covering MKV, MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, TS, M2TS, WebM, FLV and the older MPEG containers. Audio covers the high resolution formats including FLAC, ALAC, DSD and multichannel streams, with bitstream passthrough to an external receiver so the decoding happens where the amplifier wants it.
TrueTheater is the enhancement stage and it is worth having. Upscaling that adds apparent detail rather than only interpolating, colour and contrast enhancement tuned per content type, motion smoothing with an adjustable strength, noise reduction for older or heavily compressed material, and an audio stage that widens the stage on stereo material and lifts dialogue clarity without raising everything else. All of it is switchable per title.
Around the player is a media library that indexes local folders, network shares and connected devices into one browsable set with cover art, sorting and playlists, plus casting to a television, playback from a phone over the network, subtitle loading and synchronisation adjustment, chapter and bookmark management, a screenshot and clip capture function, and a mini player mode that stays out of the way while you work.

Set the audio output mode to match your receiver once. Leaving it on automatic causes it to renegotiate on every display change.
High definition disc playback depends on your drive and display chain. A file copy of the same disc plays regardless.
