About this release

Corona built its reputation on a short settings list. Where most renderers present dozens of quality controls that interact in ways only a specialist understands, this one asks for a noise threshold and a time limit and handles the rest. That is not a simplification of the underlying maths, it is a decision to stop exposing knobs that have one correct setting, and it is why so many architectural studios moved to it.

Interactive rendering is the core of the workflow. A window renders continuously while you work, refining progressively, and every change to geometry, materials, lights or camera restarts it instantly. You light a scene by looking at the result rather than by rendering tests, which changes how the work is done. The interactive session can also be moved to the viewport itself so the whole modelling window is shown lit and textured.

The material system is physically based and deliberately compact. One primary material handles almost every surface through diffuse, reflection, refraction, translucency, displacement and clear coat channels, with a small set of specialised materials for the cases it does not cover. Layered materials, decals that project onto surfaces without modifying geometry, and a scatter system for distributing vegetation or crowds across a surface with density controlled by a map are all included.

The frame buffer is a working environment rather than an output window. Exposure, white balance, highlight compression, tone mapping curves, bloom, glare, sharpening and a lookup table stage are applied live on the rendered result, and every one of them can be adjusted after the render completes without touching a single sample. Render elements come out for compositing, denoising has both a fast and a high quality path, and the result can be saved with the post stage baked in or left editable.

What you get

  • Minimal settings list with a noise threshold and a time limit as the primary controls
  • Continuous interactive rendering that restarts instantly on any scene change
  • Interactive rendering available directly in the modelling viewport
  • One physically based material covering diffuse, reflection, refraction, translucency, displacement and clear coat
  • Layered materials and projected decals that do not modify geometry
  • Scatter system for vegetation and crowds with map controlled density
  • Live post processing with exposure, tone mapping, bloom, glare and lookup table stages
  • Post adjustments applied after the render without re-sampling
  • Fast and high quality denoising paths selectable per render
  • Full render element output for compositing

Changes in this build

  • Denoiser produces cleaner results on interiors at low sample counts
  • Scatter handles far larger instance counts before memory becomes a problem
  • Decal projection improved on curved and intersecting surfaces
  • Interactive session restarts faster after material changes
  • Frame buffer gains additional tone mapping operators

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Close 3ds Max completely before you start.
  2. Extract the archive to a local folder.
  3. Disconnect from the network before running the installer.
  4. Run the setup executable as administrator and select the host version to install into.
  5. Install the material library when offered, and place it on a fast drive.
  6. Close the installer rather than launching from it, then start the host and set the renderer in the render setup dialog.

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD, eight cores or more. Rendering is processor bound
Memory32 GB recommended for large scenes with scattered vegetation
GraphicsAny modern GPU for the viewport, not required for rendering
Storage8 GB free plus room for the material library
HostA supported version of 3ds Max already installed

Notes from the desk

This renderer is processor bound. More cores make a direct difference, the graphics card does not.

Set a time limit rather than a sample count for production frames. It keeps a render sequence predictable when scene complexity varies between shots.
