Boris FX Sapphire Plug-ins
The effects package that has been supplying glows, lens flares, transitions and stylised looks to finishing rooms for decades, installed into every host on the machine at once.
A map design and animation panel for After Effects that pulls real geographic data onto the timeline as editable, animatable layers.
GEOlayers is the answer to a problem that shows up in nearly every documentary, news package and explainer video: you need a map, it needs to look like the rest of the piece, and it needs to move. The usual alternatives are a static image that never matches the design, or a hand built map that takes a day. This panel pulls real geographic data straight into a composition and gives you a map that is styled and animated like any other layer.
The map itself is composed from live data rather than an image. You choose a style, navigate to the area you want, and the panel renders it into the composition at whatever resolution the comp is set to, so a map stays sharp when you push into it rather than turning into a blur. Style is fully controllable, from the supplied designs through to a custom one where you set the colour of every element: land, water, roads by class, borders, labels, terrain and building footprints.
Animation is where it earns its place. Camera moves between locations are keyframed by setting a start and end point, and the panel handles the zoom and interpolation so the move stays legible instead of whipping across the globe. Routes can be drawn between points and revealed progressively along the path, markers can be placed and animated in, and data layers can be attached so a spreadsheet of values drives the size or colour of a set of points across a whole region.
Because the output is standard After Effects layers, everything integrates with the rest of a composition normally. Precomps, effects, masks, blending, expressions and the whole render pipeline apply as they would to anything else. Map elements come in on separate layers so labels can sit above other elements and roads can be treated independently, and the panel can push geographic data out to shape layers for anyone who wants full manual control over the artwork.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.
| Processor | Intel or AMD, quad core 3 GHz or faster |
|---|---|
| Memory | 16 GB minimum for map rendering at high resolutions |
| Graphics | 4 GB VRAM or more |
| Storage | 2 GB for the panel plus room for the map tile cache |
| Host | A recent version of After Effects already installed |
Script access to network and files must be enabled in After Effects preferences or the panel will load but do nothing.
The tile cache grows quickly across a project with many map locations. Point it at a drive with room and clear it between projects.
