About this release

Character Animator turns a layered artwork file into a puppet you perform rather than keyframe. The webcam tracks your head position, eyebrows, eyes and mouth shape, the microphone drives the lip sync, and the character on screen does what you do in real time. For anyone producing regular character content this replaces an enormous amount of frame by frame work with a performance you can record in one pass.

Rigging is done by naming layers. Import a layered file, name the parts according to the convention, and the puppet is largely built. From there you tag the pieces that should be draggable, set up the mouth shape set, add a walk cycle, and attach handles for anything you want to control with a keystroke or a slider. It is a shallow enough learning curve that a character can be performing within an afternoon.

The behaviours are what stop it looking like a paper cutout being waved around. Physics based dangle makes hair, ears and clothing trail and settle naturally. Breathing adds a subtle idle so a still character is never actually still. Cycle layers drive repeating motion from a set of drawings. Motion trigger and swap sets let you fire poses, props and expressions from the keyboard while you perform, and the magnets and collision system lets a puppet interact with objects in the scene.

Recording works in takes, exactly like an audio session. Perform a pass, keep it or record over it, layer a second pass for the arm you did not have a hand free for, and blend between takes on the timeline. Everything recorded becomes editable keyframe data afterwards, so a good performance with one bad second can be fixed rather than redone. Output goes to a rendered file directly or through Dynamic Link into the rest of the pipeline.

What you get

  • Live face tracking driving head position, eyebrows, eyes and mouth from a webcam
  • Automatic lip sync generated from recorded or live audio with editable visemes
  • Puppet rigging by layer naming from a standard layered artwork file
  • Physics behaviours for dangle, collision, gravity and wind on hair and clothing
  • Breathing and idle behaviours so a resting character stays alive
  • Trigger and swap sets for firing poses, props and expressions from the keyboard
  • Walk cycle behaviour with adjustable stride, style and terrain following
  • Take based recording with layered passes and blending between takes
  • All recorded performance converted to editable keyframe data afterwards
  • Dynamic Link output into the rest of the pipeline or direct render to file

Changes in this build

  • Face tracking more stable in poor lighting and on partial profile angles
  • Lip sync timing improved on fast speech with fewer manual corrections needed
  • Physics solver faster on puppets with many dangling elements
  • Starter puppet set expanded and rigging conventions documented in the application
  • Fixed a case where a recorded take could drift out of sync after a project reopen

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Extract the archive to a local folder with eight gigabytes free.
  2. Disconnect from the network before you begin.
  3. Pause real time protection for the duration of the install.
  4. Run Set-up.exe as administrator and choose your language.
  5. Close the installer rather than launching from it.
  6. Start the application and allow camera and microphone access when Windows asks.

System requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD, 64 bit, quad core with a high clock speed
Memory8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended
Graphics2 GB VRAM, 4 GB for heavy physics puppets
Storage10 GB free
Display1920 by 1080, plus a webcam and a microphone

Notes from the desk

Light your face evenly before you record. Tracking quality depends far more on lighting than on camera resolution.

Keep the puppet artwork file and the project together. Moving the artwork afterwards breaks the rig links.
