About this release

uTorrent became the default client on Windows because it was tiny and it did not get in the way, and both of those things are still true. The executable is a few megabytes, it starts instantly, and it will happily manage a few hundred active transfers on hardware that would struggle to open a modern browser. Everything it does happens in one window with a list on top and tabs for peers, trackers, pieces and files underneath.

The transfer engine covers the parts of the protocol that matter in practice. Distributed hash table and peer exchange find peers when a tracker is unreachable, magnet links resolve without a metadata file, protocol encryption keeps shaping equipment from recognising the traffic, and the built in rate limiter has separate ceilings for upload and download that can be scheduled by hour and day of week. That scheduler is the feature people underuse: set it to throttle during working hours and open the taps overnight and the connection stops being a problem for everyone else in the house.

Per transfer control is thorough. You can set priority per file inside a multi file torrent, skip files entirely, choose sequential ordering so a media file becomes watchable before it finishes, force a recheck against the piece hashes, and pin a transfer to a specific network interface. Labels and folders let you route finished files automatically, so anything tagged one way lands in one directory and anything tagged another lands somewhere else without you moving it.

The remote interface turns the machine into a headless box. Enable the web interface, set a port, and you can add, pause, reorder and remove transfers from a browser anywhere on the network. Combined with the scheduler and the automatic folder routing, that is enough to leave a machine in a cupboard doing its job for months without anyone touching the keyboard.

What you get

  • Very small footprint with fast start and low idle memory use
  • Distributed hash table, peer exchange and local peer discovery
  • Magnet link support with no metadata file required
  • Protocol encryption with configurable outgoing modes
  • Bandwidth scheduler with separate upload and download ceilings by hour and day
  • Per file priority, selective skipping and sequential ordering for media
  • Labels with automatic destination folders for completed transfers
  • Force recheck against piece hashes for interrupted or moved data
  • Web interface for full remote control from a browser on the same network
  • RSS handling with filters so matching releases start on their own

Changes in this build

  • Peer connection handling tuned, with faster ramp up on well seeded transfers
  • Web interface refreshed and now usable on a phone sized screen
  • Disk cache defaults raised so large transfers stop hammering the drive
  • IPv6 handling corrected on dual stack connections
  • Interface stops flickering when the list is sorted by a live column

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Unpack the archive to a local folder.
  2. Close any client already running, including any copy sitting in the notification area.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and accept the default location.
  4. Decline every bundled offer the installer presents.
  5. Close the installer instead of launching from it, then start the client from the Start menu.
  6. Open preferences, set the download folder and the completed folder, and set a bandwidth ceiling before you add anything.

System requirements

ProcessorAny 1 GHz or faster processor
Memory1 GB minimum
Storage20 MB for the application plus room for transfers
NetworkAny connection, with a forwarded port if you want incoming peers
Display1024 by 768 or higher

Notes from the desk

Set the disk cache manually if you run large transfers. The automatic value is conservative and will keep the drive busier than it needs to be.

The web interface is off by default. If you turn it on, put it on a non standard port and keep it off the open internet.
