About this release

Opera runs on Chromium, so pages render exactly as they do elsewhere and the Chrome extension catalogue is available, but the shell around the engine is more opinionated than any of its competitors. The clearest example is what ships turned on: an ad and tracker blocker built into the browser rather than added as an extension, and a free proxy service that routes browsing through one of a handful of regions with a single switch in the address bar.

Tab management is built around workspaces. You create as many as you like, each holds its own set of tabs, and switching between them is one click on the sidebar. Work in one, personal in another, a research pile in a third, and the tab strip never grows past what fits. Tab islands group related tabs automatically when they come from the same page, drawn with a visible boundary so a chain of links stays visually attached to where it came from. Any tab set can be saved and reopened later as a group.

The sidebar is the other structural difference. Messenger services dock into it as panels and stay logged in alongside whatever you are reading, so a conversation does not need its own tab or its own application. Music services dock the same way with transport controls. A player, a notes panel, a history panel and the downloads list all live there, and the whole sidebar can be hidden with a keyboard shortcut when you want the width back.

The rest is competent modern browser behaviour. Video pop out that floats a playing video above every other window, a search field that works on selected text without leaving the page, per site permission control, an import path that pulls bookmarks, passwords and history out of the other browsers on the machine, and a battery saver that measurably extends runtime on a laptop by throttling background tabs and reducing animation frame rates.

What you get

  • Built in ad and tracker blocking enabled by default with per site exceptions
  • Free built in proxy service with regional selection toggled from the address bar
  • Workspaces that keep separate sets of tabs behind one click each
  • Tab islands that visually group related tabs automatically
  • Sidebar panels for messengers and music services that stay signed in alongside the page
  • Video pop out that floats playing video above all other windows
  • Search from selected text without opening a new tab
  • Battery saver that throttles background tabs and reduces animation rates
  • Full Chrome extension catalogue compatibility on the Chromium engine
  • Import of bookmarks, passwords and history from the other browsers on the machine

Changes in this build

  • Blocker filter lists updated with better coverage on video heavy sites
  • Workspace switching animation shortened and now respects reduced motion settings
  • Sidebar panels use noticeably less memory when idle
  • Proxy connection recovers on its own after the network changes
  • Startup time improved on profiles with large bookmark collections

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Unpack the archive to a local folder.
  2. Close any running copy of the browser and check the task manager for leftover processes.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and choose whether to import from another browser during setup.
  4. Let it finish and close the window instead of launching from it.
  5. Start the browser from the Start menu and skip the account prompt on the welcome screen.
  6. Open settings and confirm the blocker and proxy states before you install extensions.

System requirements

Memory4 GB minimum, 8 GB with many sidebar panels active
Storage600 MB free
GraphicsAny adapter with hardware accelerated rendering support

Notes from the desk

The built in proxy is not a full system tunnel. It only covers browser traffic, and it does not cover other applications on the machine.

Sidebar messenger panels each run their own web instance. Keeping five of them open costs about as much memory as five tabs.
