An independent browser with its own engine, container tabs that keep sessions apart, and tracking protection that is on by default rather than buried in a settings page.
Firefox matters because it is not built on the same engine as everything else. When a browser engine becomes the only one, whatever it happens to implement becomes the specification by default, and the sites people build start assuming it. An independent engine keeps the web an actual standard rather than one vendor's behaviour written down afterwards, and that is worth something regardless of which browser you prefer day to day.
The privacy handling is the part most people install it for. Enhanced tracking protection runs by default and blocks cross site trackers, social trackers, fingerprinting scripts and cryptominers without an extension. Total cookie protection keeps each site's cookies in their own jar so they cannot be read across sites. Container tabs go further: separate work, personal and shopping identities in the same window, each with its own cookie store and login state, so accounts stay apart without separate profiles or private windows.
As a browser it is fast, and the memory handling on a large number of open tabs is better than its reputation suggests. Tabs unload when they have been idle and restore on click, so a session with hundreds of tabs is genuinely workable. Reader mode strips a page down to its text. The picture in picture player floats video over any other window. Vertical tab layouts, tab groups, profile switching and a synchronisation service that end to end encrypts bookmarks, history, passwords and open tabs across machines are all present.
The developer tooling is first rate and has been for years. The inspector, the grid and flexbox overlays, the accessibility inspector, the network panel with throttling, the responsive design mode and the debugger are the reason a lot of people who use another browser daily still keep this one installed. The extension platform remains open, and the customisation surface goes considerably deeper than the settings page suggests.
