About this release

Free Download Manager handles direct transfers and torrents through one interface and one queue, which is unusual. Most people end up running an accelerator and a separate torrent client, each with its own bandwidth settings that do not know about each other. Here a single global ceiling covers both, so the connection cannot be saturated by two applications that each think they have it to themselves.

The direct transfer engine is a conventional segmented one. Files are split into parts fetched in parallel, resumed from an on disk map after an interruption, and reassembled at the end. Browser integration through a companion extension catches links as you click them, and clipboard monitoring offers to catch addresses you copy from anywhere else. Site wide grabbing can pull every file of a chosen type from a page, with a filter so a gallery of images does not also drag down every stylesheet.

Video handling detects streams on pages and lists the available quality variants for selection, then fetches and assembles them into a single file. Playlists can be queued whole, with a naming pattern applied so the files land in order rather than as a pile of similar names. Audio only extraction is available at the point of download, so a lecture recording becomes an audio file without a conversion step afterwards.

The management side is where it earns daily use. Scheduling by hour and day, queue ordering with priorities, automatic sorting of finished files into folders by type, traffic usage limits so a metered connection is not exhausted, and a remote control interface reachable from a browser on the same network. The interface is uncluttered and readable, with a simple list and a details panel, and it stays responsive with several thousand items in the history.

What you get

  • Direct transfers and torrents in one queue under one shared bandwidth ceiling
  • Segmented transfers with resume from an on disk map after interruption
  • Browser integration through a companion extension plus clipboard monitoring
  • Site wide grabbing with file type filters for pulling a whole page of files
  • Video stream detection with quality variant selection and automatic assembly
  • Playlist queueing with naming patterns so files land in order
  • Audio only extraction at the point of download
  • Scheduling by hour and day with queue priorities
  • Automatic sorting of completed files into folders by type
  • Remote control interface reachable from a browser on the same network

Changes in this build

  • Stream detection updated for sites that recently changed their player markup
  • Torrent engine handles larger swarms with lower processor use
  • Remote interface reworked and now usable on a phone sized screen
  • Traffic limit counter resets correctly across month boundaries
  • Faster assembly of fragmented streams on long recordings

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Unpack the archive to a local folder.
  2. Close every browser window so the extension can register.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and accept the default location.
  4. Tick the browsers you use when the installer offers integration.
  5. Close the installer rather than launching from it, then start the application from the Start menu.
  6. Set the global bandwidth ceiling and the destination folders before you queue anything large.

System requirements

ProcessorAny 1.5 GHz or faster processor
Memory2 GB minimum, 4 GB with many active transfers
Storage200 MB for the application plus room for transfers
NetworkAny connection, with a forwarded port for incoming torrent peers
Display1280 by 720 or higher

Notes from the desk

The shared bandwidth ceiling covers both transfer types. If torrents feel slow, check whether a direct queue is consuming the allowance.

Set a traffic limit if the connection is metered. The scheduler will happily run all night and use everything you have.
