ExpressVPN is a tunnel client built around getting out of the way. One large button connects to the location it thinks is best, the list of locations is searchable and grouped by region, and everything else lives behind a settings panel that most people open once. The client handles protocol selection automatically, falling back through the available options when a network blocks one of them, which is the behaviour that matters on restrictive connections.
The protocol set includes a modern lightweight one that gives noticeably better throughput and faster reconnection than the older options, alongside the established protocols for compatibility with networks that treat anything unfamiliar as suspicious. You can pin a specific protocol if you know what a network allows, or leave it automatic and let the client work it out. Connection handover between wired, wireless and mobile happens without dropping the tunnel.
Split tunnelling is per application. You choose which programs go through the tunnel and which do not, as either a list of included applications or a list of excluded ones. That is how you keep a backup client, a game or a work application on the direct connection while a browser stays tunnelled, and it is also how you stop a large transfer from routing through a distant server and halving its speed for no benefit.
The kill switch is on by default and is the setting worth understanding. If the tunnel drops for any reason, network access is blocked entirely until it comes back, rather than quietly falling through to the direct connection. That is the correct behaviour and it is also the reason people occasionally think their connection has broken when the client has actually done exactly what it was told. The client also includes an encrypted resolver so lookups do not travel outside the tunnel.
Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

If the network appears dead after a disconnect, the kill switch is doing its job. Reconnect or disable it deliberately rather than reinstalling anything.
Pick a nearby location for general use. Distance costs latency, and a server on the other side of the world will make everything feel slow.
