About this release

Brave is Chromium with the blocking layer moved into the engine instead of bolted on as an extension. Advertisements, trackers, third party cookies and fingerprinting attempts are refused before the request leaves the machine, which is both faster and harder to work around than a filter running in an extension sandbox. On a page heavy with advertising the difference in load time is obvious without measuring anything.

The shield panel gives per site control without digging through settings. Blocking strength, script blocking, cookie policy, fingerprinting protection and the upgrade to encrypted connections can each be adjusted for the site you are on, and the change sticks for that site only. When a page genuinely breaks because something was blocked, one click on the shield tells you what was refused and lets you allow the specific piece rather than turning protection off wholesale.

Private windows come in two forms. The ordinary one behaves like any other browser's private mode, keeping nothing after the window closes. The second routes traffic through an anonymising relay network, so the site sees an exit point rather than your connection and your provider sees an encrypted stream. It is slower, as anything routed through relays is, but it is built into the browser rather than requiring a separate application.

Everything else you expect from a Chromium browser is present and works. The full Chrome extension catalogue installs. Profiles keep separate cookies, history and extensions. Vertical tab layout is available. There is a reader mode, a built in video pop out, per site permission control, a password manager that can be turned off entirely, and a synchronisation system that pairs devices with a phrase instead of an account. The optional cryptocurrency and rewards components can be disabled at first run and stay disabled.

What you get

  • Engine level blocking of advertisements, trackers, third party cookies and fingerprinting
  • Per site shield panel for blocking strength, scripts, cookies and connection upgrading
  • Report of exactly what was refused on a page, with selective allowance for broken elements
  • Private windows with an option to route through an anonymising relay network
  • Full Chrome extension catalogue compatibility
  • Profiles with independent cookies, history, extensions and settings
  • Vertical tab layout with collapse, plus tab groups and pinned tabs
  • Reader mode, video pop out and per site permission control
  • Device synchronisation using a pairing phrase rather than an account
  • Optional reward and wallet components that can be disabled permanently at first run

Changes in this build

  • Filter lists updated with better coverage of newer tracking techniques
  • Fingerprinting protection refined so fewer legitimate sites need an exception
  • Lower memory use on sessions with many tabs open for long periods
  • Relay routed private windows connect faster and fail over more cleanly
  • Shield panel redesigned so the per site controls are readable at a glance

Installation

Read the whole list before you start. Most of the reports that come into the desk about this title turn out to be a step taken out of order.

  1. Unpack the archive to a local folder.
  2. Close any running copy of the browser and clear leftover processes from the task manager.
  3. Run the installer as administrator.
  4. Close the installer instead of launching from it.
  5. Start the browser from the Start menu and decline the reward and wallet components on the welcome screen if you do not want them.
  6. Open settings and set the default shield strength before you begin browsing.

System requirements

ProcessorAny 1.6 GHz or faster dual core processor
Memory4 GB minimum, 8 GB for heavy tab use
Storage800 MB free
GraphicsAny adapter with hardware accelerated rendering support
Display1280 by 720 or higher

Notes from the desk

Aggressive shield settings break a small number of sites, usually payment and banking flows. Use the per site allowance rather than lowering the global setting.

Relay routed private windows are slower by design. Use them deliberately rather than as your default window.
